Pixel Laser Treatments

The technology is known as ablative fractional technology. Skin is treated by removing tissue via a dot Pixel hand-piece. Pixel technology is performed as a localized or "scattered" ablation vs. total ablation as seen in other technology. The Pixel treats a small fraction of the skin, in a particular manner, where in which the tiny pixelations of skin are lasered within the assigned zone. The Pixel allows about 65% of the lasered skin to remain "as is" and untreated around the Pixel therapy treated areas. The untouched skin may then act as a reservoir for the promotion of rapid healing to the newly lasered skin, reducing the downtime significantly.

Skin resurfacing occurs as the laser passes over the affected skin to remove damaged outer layers and, through heat, stimulates the production of collagen and new skin cells in the underlying layers.

The Pixel technology allows for a smoother, tighter, and more improved skin texture after just several sessions, if not visible in the first session. The technology has demonstrated a triggering of biological responses that may lead to collagen remodeling; responsible for the smoothing of fine lines and wrinkles, improvement of laxity and discoloration.

The Pixel technology has been shown to improve the appearance of difficult to treat acne and keloid scars with just several treatments. The improvement that has been seen with tissue laxity, whether around the mouth, eyelids, or the neck, it is an excellent alternative to botox for several skin types.

Indications:

  • Lessens acne or surgical scars
  • Treats pigment related conditions
  • Evens out uneven skin tone and smoothes skin texture
  • Rejuvenates skin
  • Lessens wrinkles and fine lines
  • Reduces stretch marks

The Pixel laser resurfacing protocol has been shown to be so gentle that treatment can translate to those hard to treat areas once prohibitive by traditional resurfacing procedures, while being effective in such a short amount of time.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Treatments

IPL, also called photo-rejuvenation, was designed to combat the effects of aging and damaged skin in a softer, gentler way than some more aggressive treatments. It uses broad-spectrum light that filters out unwanted wavelengths in treating a plethora of skin conditions. It is non-ablative, which means it does not damage the surface of the skin. Its intense light penetrates to deeper levels of the skin in treating various conditions, and its thermal effect also causes production of new collagen, leading to wrinkle reduction. The feeling produced by the laser is that of a tiny pinch or a prickling sensation. Different wavelengths treat different conditions.

Because IPL does not damage the skin surface, there is little to no discomfort or recovery time for most people. You can return to work and/or your normal activities immediately after treatment. Minor side effects can include temporary redness and an increase or decrease in pigment in any treated areas. Minimizing sun exposure helps to reduce these side effects.
For best results, multiple treatments are needed. The degree of improvement is gradual and persistent over a series of treatments, generally from three to six or more, depending on the severity of each patient's skin damage. Generalized improvement applies to many conditions, including pink and brown discoloration (though there is initial darkening), spider veins, general sun damage, age spots, pore size, acne scarring, fine to moderate wrinkles and skin laxity, texture, and smoothness.
Redness, itchiness, and (rarely) a stinging sensation are possible post-treatment side effects.  One definite side effect of any laser treatment is the skin's increased sensitivity to UV rays. The newly exposed cells that give your skin its younger looking appearance are substantially more prone to sun damage. Therefore, it is crucial to apply a high-strength SPF sunscreen before stepping out of the house.
You may or may not be a good candidate for IPL treatment. A discussion with one of Dr. Mash's skin care consultants can clarify this and other choices that would be best for your skin and your goals.

XTRAC Laser

XTRAC Laser Treatment is an FDA-approved excimer laser procedure used to treat active skin lesions associated with psoriasis and vitiligo. It is designed to reduce the appearance of psoriasis and vitiligo, with results typically lasting several months before any symptoms reappear. This procedure uses a wavelength of 308nm to gently clear skin. XTRAC It is a safe and quick procedure that effectively clears the skin of active lesions while leaving healthy skin intact.
Psoriasis is a common, chronic condition that causes patches of itchy, scaly and inflamed skin, known as plaques, to appear on the body. This condition most commonly appears on the knees, elbows, hands, feet and scalp, and affects over seven million people in the US each year. Many patients are bothered by the sometimes severe itching and the unsightly appearance associated with the condition.
Vitiligo causes white spots to develop on the skin in varying sizes and locations. These spots develop when pigment cells are destroyed and melanin, the pigment that colors the skin, can no longer be produced. Vitiligo is most commonly found in exposed areas, such as the hands and face, or around body openings or folds, such as the eyes, nostrils, mouth, arm pits and genitalia. Nearly half of all vitiligo cases occur in patients under the age of 20; this condition tends to run in families.
Benefits:
Patients with psoriasis or vitiligo have likely tried countless other treatment options for their condition, such as topical cream, systemic medications and UVB therapy. While these treatments can offer some relief from symptoms, they often take much longer to perform and may expose the entire body to medication. The XTRAC laser offers several benefits over other treatments, including:

  • Shorter treatment time
  • No UV exposure to healthy skin
  • No hassle of daily creams
  • No risk of skin thinning or stretch marks
  • No risk of liver damage or birth defects
  • Can be used on hard to treat areas
  • Remission times of up to 3-6 months

Candidates:
The XTRAC laser is best designed for patients with mild to moderate psoriasis or vitiligo, and is often used by those who have had unsuccessful results from topical or systemic medication. Many major insurance companies cover the XTRAC laser procedure for treatment of these skin conditions, based on medical necessity.
Procedure:
During the XTRAC procedure, concentrated beams of laser light are delivered directly to the targeted areas from a fiber-optic system that is placed directly on the skin and moved across the area. The high-exposure laser energy effectively treats active lesions while leaving healthy skin intact. Treatment sessions last from 5-30 minutes depending on amount of skin involved. You may experience feelings of warmth, but most patients do not experience any pain or discomfort during the XTRAC laser procedure. Afterwards, your skin may feel like it has a mild sunburn and may be itchy or red, but these side effects are usually mild and go away on their own within a few days. Though full results will take time, you may start to notice early results appearing after just one or two treatments sessions.
